In 18th century Europe, clandestine establishments started popping up in homes for the entertainment, gambling and all the Epicurian pleasures of their exquisite customers. They were called "Casino "  — a word rooted in the Italian "Casa " from which the modern term Casino derives.  Today casinos are well-known to be houses of gambling, theatre and great food —like the famous  Il Ridotto,  which opened in Venice, Italy in 1638.

But we’re in Miami. More specifically, The Design District, West of Midtown.   And  in 2012 — the age of food trucks and Pop-Up restaurants —  the magic of undercover mystery one finds at The Copperbox can thrill even a jaded cyber society . Beforehand, in an M-16 style, you will receive a reservation confirmation form asking you what you like and dislike. Who’s coming and What’s for dinner remain a secret until you arrive.

Step into The Copperbox  Culinary Atelier,  a clandestine-like loft  – a former woodshop – with stressed concrete floors  and walls, and  you’re in an intimate and elegant dining room aglow with candle chandeliers and fine drapery, set for 10 to 30 guests at a time.

It is a dinner party where champagne flows freely followed by quaint and delicious amuse-bouche, and people who are total strangers begin to mingle and talk before they sit down at one of the long tables to a multi-course dinner.

And the journey begins.
The owner, Chef Gabriela Machado, who has brought her passion for cuisine from Venezuela, prepares one-of-a- kind menus with well-thought of and artfully plated dishes, all destined to surprise and delight. Seared Hudson Valley foie gras topped with gold leaf nestled in a fig next to a fragrant panna cotta; or a simple cauliflower bisque was turned into a beguiling crème with the addition of banana; the first perfectly paired with a sweet Sauternes and the other with a crisp white from Alto Adige.

I would never have thought to pair Pork Belly and Madagascar Shrimp, but it works well with a tangle of sweet micro veggies and sage blossoms. Avocado gnocchi, bone marrow, blood sausage and cannellini beans accompanied a grilled milk-fed veal tenderloin, and house-dried grapes on the vine adorned a Rabbit terrine.

The three-cheese course spanned Europe’s best cheese regions and dessert was an iced Spanish Turrón with strawberry-green tea ice cream paired with a Champagne Ployez Jacquemart Brut Rosé.

“In the spirit of mindful living, we are grateful that you refrain from using your cellphones, cameras, texting and web devices,” admonishes the menu.   There’s not a ring or a flash at the table…. Just conversation, good time and unobtrusive but great service.

Copperbox, is a magic box that takes you away from time into an enchanted space filled with gracious hosting.

Thursdays are open to the public by reservation, and other nights are by invitation-only.
