Any  fish market anywhere in the world  has the uncanny ability to draw shoppers and curious browsers into the frozen still life of a variety of fish and seafood artfully displayed in crushed ice beds,  like in the air conditioned Fish Fish Restaurant, Bar and Market.

This preamble, an appetite opener, is owners Melvyn and Rebecca Franks’ message that freshness is the name of the game when it comes to the “you-pick-it-we-make-it” fish and seafood.

The catch of the day – silvery hogfish, red snapper, gray-blue branzino,  zebra-striped lionfish, Sunray Venus clams from Pine Island Sound, FL, conch, oysters and lobsters – literally jump from the market where, according to George, the fish buyer,  they arrived that same day from local fishermen’s boats or were newly imported by a trusted fish supplier,  into the adjoining kitchen where a team of cooks headed by Chef Oscar Quezada fry, sauté, blacken, grill, roast and prepare "Fish Done Right" before it lands on your plate at one of the restaurant’s tables or at the Bar.

Chef Oscar Quezada is from Guadalajara, in the State of Jalisco, Mexico, where he acquired his appreciation for fresh and natural food in his family’s farm before immigrating to the US. A self-taught culinary talent, he comes to Fish Fish from Lazy Days in Islamorada, where he was Executive Chef for fifteen years, with a Florida Keys inspired menu.  In fact, with its carved mermaid, the nautical wooden fixtures, the tanks holding live Maine lobsters and crabs and the friendly waiters, all of Fish Fish feels like an upscale yet laid back and casual fish house in the Keys.

At a recent tasting dinner, I had a chance to taste a wide range of dishes on the menu, starting with a fabulous sampling of raw bar items featuring deliciously-flavored fire-roasted Sunray Venus clams, raw oyster and fleshy jumbo shrimp cocktail accompanied by two sauces and toasted slices of freshly baked ciabatta bread, which says the menu, are available upon request.

Understandably so, because they’re so good one would tempted to gorge on bread instead of  the large portions of  offerings  from  sushi grade tuna tataki ($16) served with micro greens, ginger wasabi crème and Thai dipping sauce, steamed mussels of clams ($16) in a white wine butter sauce or Fra Diavolo style and small plates such as fried calamari with remoulade and marinara sauces ($9), Oscar’s Baja fish tacos, a Jumbo lump crab cake with salad and lime aioli ($12); lobster or steak quesadillas ($18) and Lobster truffled mac and cheese ( $18).

A sampling of soups showcased a delicious, lip puckering Bahamian-style conch chowder and an equally delicious and velvety textured traditional New England clam chowder with plenty of plump clams, diced potatoes and bacon bits for that ineffable addictive umami taste.  Oh, to lunch on that soup alone!

The salad course – a deconstructed Caesar salad ($14) with grilled hearts of romaine doused in a tasty house-made Caesar and topped with rich aged Parmesan shavings – like the other salads on the menu can be ordered with added grilled or blackened chicken, shrimp, any catch-of-the-day, scallops of ½ a lobster tail.

Highlight: a stunning whole fried Hog Snapper for two with meaty wild Royal Red shrimp a la plancha 

While the specialties of the house include sautéed Yellow Tail snapper ($26) with Key lime butter sauce over lemongrass scented Basmati Rice and grilled asparagus; Alaskan black cod ($45 pan-seared with miso glaze or gluten-free tamari sauce; broiled seafood platter ($45) and prime Black Angus Spinalas steak with steak fries and green beans ($37), among other,   the highlight of the tasting menu was a stunning whole fried Hog Snapper for two with meaty wild Royal Red shrimp a la plancha and sides of mushroom truffle risotto, and sautéed spinach – both samplers of the pastas and risottos chef Oscar offers in the menu such as the Shrimp scampi over linguini ($16/$26) with a buttery wine and garlic sauce and  Seafood fettuccini ($19/$34) in a rosada-tomato-basil sauce and an ocean-full of  shrimp, scallops and lobster tail.

Who would have thought that at the end of such a meal I would still have room for dessert? But Chef Oscar’s Key Lime Pie that I planned to just taste, turned out to be the best Key Lime pie I’ve had for a very, very long time……

Seafood Market is open from 10am-10pm daily. Closed Mondays.

Seafood Restaurant serves Lunch and dinner all day Sunday-Thursday: 11:00 am - 10:00pm, till 11:00 pm  Friday-Saturday: Closed Mondays.

Seafood Bar: All Day Every Day Fish Fish happy hour   from 11:00 a.m. till closing with discounted beers and drinks and  $6 Bar Bites.  and ending when we close!! All day every day at the bar!! 50% on well and select beers.
