Julia Child died before My Life in France, a memoir compiled from her papers and letters reached completion. Her great-grand-nephew Alex Prud’homme, a best seeling writer in his own right, captures the voice, her sense of humor, her incisive remarks of the woman who revolutionized the way Americans thought about French food and food in general.
The book demystifies the icon she became and brings forth the young woman who sailed to France with her new husband Paul in 1948, and on her first day in France upon debarking had an epiphany with a sole meuniere in Rouen… “…perfectly browned in a sputtering butter sauce with a sprinkling of chopped parsley on top… with a light but distinct taste of the ocean that blended marvelously with the browned butter… a morsel of perfection. ”
From there, her gargantuan appetite for life and food combined with her methodical American mind leads her to investigate everything there is to know about every ingredient that passes her lips.
The book follows Child's growth as a cook, from her early days in Paris in the aftermath of WWII, as she discovers the sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and colors of France. The details reveal more than the gradual education of Child's palate and her intense love for her husband, Paul. It reveals her anti-McCarthy politics and the early years of the cold war, the isolationist feelings of Americans at that time.
It goes on telling of her partnership with Simone Beck and Louisette Bertholle which led to the famous Mastering the Art of French Cooking and her passion for food which made her into one of the best and most influential teachers of gastronomy of the twentieth century. The reader gets to understand the role that the beginning of television in America played in the gastronomic education of the following generations, and how, foreseeing the gradual disappearance of artisanal foods, Julia went on recording invaluable documentaries of gorgeous meals and the secret arts of making food from scratch in a bygone era….
