Great Wines For $10 and Under
by Simone Zarmati Diament

2003 R.H. PHILLIPS CHARDONNAY, California ( with New Twist-Off Cap) ( $9.00)
The twist-off-cap is a commitment to quality, according to the R.H. Phillips winemakers, to keep the wine in prime condition as it minimizes the chances of oxidation. This Chard's "Apple pie" spice notes mingle with tangerine and mango on the nose. The addition of ten percent Viognier imparts tropical fruit aromas and bright fruit. The hint of oak give a rich mouthfeel with crisp acidity. A clean citrus finish make this a versatile food wine or a sipper. 224 Miracle Mile, Coral Gables.

2002 R.H. PHILLIPS SHIRAZ, California, ( with New Twist-Off Cap) ( $9.00)
If the twist off cap doesn't turn you off, or the shape of the bottle, or the hinged neck which makes the pour a bit splurty, the fact that the attached cork doesn't fit in the gullet might. But the wine itself is quite good for the price. Fresh, jammy raspberry flavors, accented with toasty oak and spice notes, protect you from the acidity and make it a nice wine to drink with poultry, meat and some cheeses.

2001 CHÂTEAU DE BEAUCASTEL RESERVE PERRIN COTE DU RHONE, France ($8.99 At Publix, Crown)
This golden hued, dry white is made of the traditional Grenache Blanc (50%) blended with 20% Bourboulene, 10% Marsanne, 10% Rousanne, and 10% Viognier grapes. It is an intense wine with body, a good structure, herbal qualities and aromatic nose of lush peach and summer flowers. The balance between fruit and acidity is quite seductive and goes well with spicy cuisine.

2002 CHÂTEAU VILLOTE RAUZAN BORDEAUX , France ($7.19 at Publix )
Light bodied, straw colored, this white Sauvignon Blanc from Bordeaux is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Muscadelle grapes. It is dry yet fruity with hints of citrus and honeysuckle. Refreshing on a sultry summer afternoon.
