Affordable and Delicious Bubblies
Or How to Impress Your Guests
On a Budget

by Simone Zarmati Diament

Marquis de la Tour – Loire Valley, France ($ 8.99) I served this wine as an aperitif to a group of my fellow Dames d’Escoffier at a recent meeting – this is a group of women highly educated in food and wine – without telling the price. Everybody marveled at the gorgeous salmon pink color, the typical Loire Valley fines bulles or small bubbles. Delicate and elegant, with faint notes of berries and ripe fruit, and a good acidity that, as it enhances the taste of the grapes, preserves the wine from being cloying. Clean, crisp and refreshing: this wine competes with the best bubblies I’ve had, and you can’t beat the price. Just don’t tell your guests….

Petalo – Il Vino Dell’Amore – Veneto, Italy ($14) This golden color spumante or sparkling wine from Moscat grapes grown in Colli Euganei in the northeast of Italy, between Verona and Venice is delicately sweet and aromatic with a pleasant scent of roses and hints of apricot, peach and ripe melon. As some of the best Chardonnays, it is buttery and silky on the palate, yet crisp. It is great either as an aperitif, or paired with spicy seafood, or as a dessert wine.
