The Thai Room Restaurant is husband and wife, Ken and Patty Ekkhot’s dream-come-true of owning their own restaurant after working for Ken's great aunt, Wattana Sumonthee of Wattana Thai Restaurant in West Palm Beach  for many years.   Hospitality definitely runs on both sides of their family as Patty's Aunt Kim also owns Siam Square, on US 1, in North Palm Beach.

The Ekkhots, who were both born in Thailand -- and live nearby with their infant son --   refurbished an old Italian spot by painting the walls bright red, reupholstering the booths in black with brightly colored pillows, contrasting with the simple wood tables and chairs.

Chef Ken, who also cooked at Wattana for three years, uses only fresh ingredients -- including fresh veggies, herbs, and spices  --  in all the dishes, including fresh lemongrass, basil leaves, kaffir leaves, and ginger. Each dish is made, to order, for each diner. Patty's mom, Varaport Paisanvit, creates all of the sauces - plum sauce, peanut sauce, ponzu sauce, sweet and sour sauce, and garlic sauce – daily.

The menu lists appetizers such as Tom Kha Gai (coconut milk soup, with chicken, mushrooms, scallions, lemongrass, and kaffir leaves); Winter Shrimp (three shrimp, wrapped with ground chicken and dough, deep-fried, and served with plum sauce); curry puffs; crispy calamari with plum sauce; marinated chicken satay, served with peanut sauce and cucumber relish; papaya salad (papaya, carrots, tomatoes, peanuts, and shrimp, tossed in a dressing of sweet and spicy lime juice); and the Thai Room Salad (shrimp, squid, and imitation crab meat, red onions, scallions, tomatoes, and cucumbers, mixed with Thai chili paste).

In addition to a wide array of stir-fried dishes and noodle dishes -- including Pad Thai and Drunken Noodles --   entrees, from the Chef's Recommendation section of the menu, includeThree Musketeers (sautéed chicken, beef, and pork, served on a bed of veggies, topped with sizzling Thai garlic sauce); Lobster Curry (broiled lobster tail, broccoli, mushrooms, bell peppers, and squash, in a sauce of red curry paste and coconut milk); Crispy Duck (deep-fried, battered half-duck, served with steamed broccoli and carrots, with a sweet black bean sauce on the side); and Shrimp Fuji (grilled jumbo shrimp, served on a bed of veggies, with a sizzling Thai chili sauce).

For dessert there’s fried bananas (with or without ice cream); fried vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup; sticky rice topped with vanilla or chocolate ice cream; or rainbow sherbet.

The Thai Room Restaurant is open for lunch, dinner, and small bites daily; from 11:30 a.m. - 10:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 12:00 noon - 10:00 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. Take out and delivery available. It is located in the Lake Point Center (anchored by the Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market at the northeast corner of Jog Road) at 6901 Okeechobee Boulevard, Unit # D-15, in West Palm Beach, Florida. 561.689.1830 www.thairoomwpb.com.
